Communique to activists: legal

  • by

Dear movement,

2 weeks to go!!! We are so inspired by the work that we’ve seen coming from your organizing efforts. We’re excited to be able to offer our solidarity, and support in any way we can. We want to share with you some of the preparation that we have been doing, and also, share some of the information that we have been receiving so that we can take care of each other, and ensure that everyone stays as safe as possible.

First, the warnings and advice:

1. VEHICLES:

People are being pulled over in their vehicles. This is a great way to get at organizers and folks tied up in small charges, fines, and generally to get id’s and intelligence. Of the stops we know about, they are being pulled over “to see if the person has been drinking” completely randomly, not at a ride-check point etc.

BE CAREFUL – consider not driving unless you have to, wear your seat belt, have your driver’s license, don’t have drugs or alcohol, and have proper insurance etc. also, pay any fines you currently have, to be a squeaky clean as possible.

We also know, that individual’s license plates are being run by the police, for “administration purposes”. These plates are being flagged, and so you are more likely to get pulled over right now if your car has been at other protests over the years, is registered and owned by you etc.

2. SURVEILLANCE:

We have been told, by a reporter that the police have confirmed that they are reading texts, listening to phone calls and reading emails of G20 protesters.

We also know that some organizers are now being followed by foot and by van at all times.

BE CAREFUL! – take care of each other, have buddies, know who is at risk, and take extra steps of caution to ensure they are being supported.
